Bracing and Products!

Our PROTx therapists can recommend a variety of braces and products, from TENS machines to pillows, to help you in your rehabilitation journey.
Bracing is used to bridge the gap between an injured and a healthy joint, or to extend the quality of life in a weakened or aging joint. Depending on your needs, bracing can be done for almost any joint. When combined with other modalities of rehabilitation, bracing can be a crucial tool to help get you back into doing the activities that bring you joy!
What does the Bracing Process involve?
The process starts with a conversation with your therapist or our Bracing Specialist to determine the best course of bracing to fit your needs! With the knee joint for example, there are different types of braces that can give you added stability, or help restrict movement to assist your recovery from ligament damage, or to help with offloading pressure to help with degenerative damage caused by illness such as osteoarthritis.
Nova Scotia has long wait times for orthopedic surgeries, but bracing (along with physiotherapy) can help you stay active while you wait! Your brace will still be useful after surgery to reduce the pressure on your new knee joint.
For some knee injuries, a brace can help you avoid surgery all together! Knee braces can help to stabilize the joint, protect ligaments from added strain and help you stay in the activities you love.
Knee Brace Loaner Program! Ideal for those suffering from osteoarthritis, a meniscus injury or other knee pain. There are different options for bracing a knee with OA. Depending on where the arthritic changes are, you may need a brace to offload one side of the joint or a brace to offload the entire joint may be needed. An xray (with ‘skyline view’) and a consultation with our bracing specialist will determine which brace will be most effective for you!
Book a free consultation today! Trial a brace and once you’ve felt the benefits first hand, you’ll want one of your own. After the trial period, a new brace will be custom fitted for you to reduce pressure in the knee and allow you to get back to the activities you love to do.

Frequently Asked Questions
You do not require a doctor’s referral to have a brace consult. If you are using health insurance for the cost of the custom knee brace, they generally will require a physician’s referral with the diagnosis stated (including if it is your right or left knee) and that a ‘custom brace is recommended’.
Our bracing specialist will review the different brace types and explain which one would suit you best.
Our bracing specialist will review your case and answer any questions you have. Once the need for a custom brace is confirmed, they will complete the fitting measurements required. A deposit on the cost of the brace is required for the order to be placed.
Depending on the type of brace you need, once the measurements are submitted the custom brace takes approximately 3 weeks.
