Are your legs tired and achy at the end of the day? Feet so sore you need to elevate them? Compression stockings may be the tool you need!

Compression stockings, also known as compression socks or support stockings, are specialized garments that apply graduated pressure to your legs. Here are multiple benefits of wearing compression stockings:

  1. Improved Circulation: Compression stockings help improve blood circulation by applying gentle pressure on the legs. The graduated compression, with the highest pressure at the ankle and gradually decreasing pressure up the leg, assists in pushing blood upward towards the heart. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals who have poor circulation or those who spend long periods sitting or standing.
  2. Reduced Swelling and Edema: Compression stockings can effectively reduce swelling and edema (fluid retention) in the legs and ankles. By promoting better circulation and preventing fluid from pooling in the lower extremities, compression stockings help alleviate discomfort, heaviness, and the appearance of swollen legs.
  3. Prevention of Blood Clots: Wearing compression stockings is commonly recommended for individuals at risk of developing blood clots, such as those who have undergone surgery, have a history of blood clots, or have conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Compression stockings assist in preventing the formation of blood clots by aiding blood flow back to the heart and reducing the risk of blood pooling.
  4. Alleviation of Leg Fatigue and Heaviness: People who spend long hours on their feet or have occupations that involve prolonged sitting often experience leg fatigue and heaviness. Compression stockings can help reduce these symptoms by promoting better blood flow, preventing blood from pooling, and providing support to the muscles and veins in the legs.
  5. Relief from Varicose Veins and Spider Veins: Compression stockings can provide symptomatic relief for varicose veins and spider veins. They help improve venous return and reduce the appearance of these visible veins by supporting the weakened or damaged vein walls and enhancing circulation.
  6. Support during Pregnancy: Pregnant women often experience swelling, leg discomfort, and varicose veins due to hormonal changes and increased pressure on the veins. Compression stockings can provide relief by promoting blood flow, reducing swelling, and supporting the leg veins, thus alleviating pregnancy-related leg issues.

It’s important to note that compression stockings should be worn as prescribed by a healthcare professional such as our PROTx Bracing and Product specialist who is a Certified Fitter.

Fittings are available at all PROTx locations (Dartmouth, Lower Sackville, Elmsdale, Stewiacke).
